Partner characterization

The Havelland-Fläming region is situated Southwest of Berlin, covering about 6700 km² with 730 000 inhabitants. The region is divided into two main landscapes: Havelland - wetlands of the river Havel with large lakes, situated 30 – 70 km West of Berlin and Fläming – a hilly landscape 50 - 90 km Southwest of Berlin with mainly agricultural areas as well as extended forests.

In the vicinity of Berlin the region shows a remarkable growth of inhabitants and a fairly low rate of unemployment, whereas the more rural parts and some old industrial zones have structural deficits and are characterised by a continuous decline of population (-1% p.a.) and a strong unemployment (more than 20%).

The Regional Planning Association Havelland-Fläming was founded in 1993. The counties Havelland, Potsdam-Mittelmark and Teltow-Fläming as well as the cities Potsdam and Brandenburg an der Havel are associated with the regional planning authority. Its only legal task is to work out regional plans. The recent plan displays 13 wind energy zones, which cover about 1 % of the region’s area. This plan entered into force in March 2005.

Encouraged by an increasing interest in regional cooperation the planning department is involved in project activities since 1998. The most recent project within the Interreg III framework is WIND TECH KNOW.
