Milestones of European Wind Energy Policy - Overview
Wind power is said to be Europe's fastest growing energy technology, because:
- Europe is world leading in the field of wind energy
- 2/3 of the installed world capacity is located in Europe
- 90 per cent of the wind power sold worldwide is generated in Europe
- Major wind energy manufacturers are based in Europe
- Employment by wind energy has been growing above average in Europe
- Due to its dynamic development and rapid market growth, wind energy is essential for Europe to meet the targets set in the 2001/ 77/ EU "Renewable Electricity Directive", to increase the amount of renewable electricity from 14% in 1997 to 22% in 2010
- Targets of European wind energy policy by 2010
- 75,000 MW installed including 10,000 MW offshore
- 5.5% of European electricity generation
- Provision of a 50% share of the EU's "Renewable Electricity Directive",
- Share of 30% to meet the EU Kyoto Protocol commitment
- Wind power installed in selected European countries by end of 2004 (MW)

- Contribution of wind power to European electricity generation 1995 - 2020 (%)

- Contribution of wind power to European electricity generation capacity 1995 - 2020 (%)
